Huskie Alternative Breaks logoHuskie Alternative Breaks (HAB) has openings for its international alternative break trip being held from May 15 to May 22 in Nicaragua.

An alternative break is a service-learning trip where a group of college students engage in volunteer service during a designated university break. Alternative break trips allows students to engage in hands-on service experience, learn about social issues and create life-long memories and friendships.

The focus of the upcoming International Alternative Break trip to Nicaragua is “Rural Education in a Developing Country.”

On this trip, participants will support an elementary school and its children in a nearby rural community. Students will assist teachers in classrooms and engage the students with ESL, art and music projects, as well as participating in break and after-school activities and improving the school’s buildings and grounds.

Students will attend trip meetings beforehand to gain more background on the social issue (rural education) and globalization as well as have an opportunity to get to know the other students who will be attending the trip.

Applications are available online for this great opportunity for students to immerse themselves in a culture outside of their own through service.

For more information, including details related to the costs, fundraising opportunities and requirements associated with the trip, call (815) 753-6511 or email HAB@niu.edu.
